VIP, small group or regular

This listing is really three products behind one price band. The regular option is the coach as most people picture it; the small-group option caps the numbers; the VIP option is smaller again and costs correspondingly more. What does not change is the route, the ticket or the two hours inside.

What changes is the odds on the guide. The rule is fixed at six participants: a live archaeologist joins a departure that reaches six people, and below that everybody is handed an audio guide instead. On a regular summer coach that threshold is met most days. On a Tuesday in February, on a VIP option that caps at four, it is met by definition never.

Read that rule alongside the price. Paying more for a smaller group can mean paying more for the version guaranteed to arrive without a guide.

The four-person minimum

Separately from the guide rule, the departure itself needs four people to run. If it does not fill, the operator offers an alternative date or time, or a full refund.

That is fair, and it is also a scheduling risk on a short trip: a cancellation on the morning of your only free day in Naples leaves you buying a train ticket at Garibaldi anyway. In low season, a tour with no minimum — the one that meets you at the gate — carries less of that risk.

Where the coach collects you

Pickup is included from set points around central Naples, confirmed by email or in the app the night before. Book inside eight hours of departure and that flexibility disappears: the only available pickup point becomes the Starhotels Terminus on Piazza Garibaldi, opposite Napoli Centrale.

Return times are described by the operator as approximate, which on the A3 in August is an honest description rather than an evasion. Do not book a train or a restaurant tight against the end of this tour.

The cameo factory

The itinerary includes a live demonstration at a traditional cameo workshop, where shells are hand-carved using Roman-era techniques. It is genuinely a local craft — Torre del Greco has carved cameos for two centuries — and it is also a retail stop, with the sales floor at the end of the demonstration.

It is short, and it is not presented as optional. If you would rather spend every available minute inside the archaeological site, this is the line in the itinerary to weigh.

What to bring, and what cannot come

The listing asks for a passport or ID card, comfortable shoes, water and weather-appropriate clothing. It bans pets, baby strollers, luggage or large bags, drones, walking sticks, and food and drink in the vehicle.

The stroller ban is worth reading twice if you are travelling with a small child: the operator recommends a baby carrier instead, because Pompeii's paving is rutted basalt with high kerbs and stepping stones set across the roads.
